How to (suddenly) become a yogi?

Dedicated to all of those who are having trouble comiting to a yogic lifestyle.

If you're in a situation where you've seen the benefits of a yoga practice and want to become a real yogi, not just a-sometime's-yogi then you've come to the right place.

Being a yogi is not difficult, but it's also not easy, specially in the beggining when the mind is too much habituated to a tamasic lifestyle.

1st step - Identify all the things you can think of that put you away from your path.

These can be numerous, but start with the grossest ones first.
Everything you can think of that takes you away from your values and your dedication to yoga.
Write it down and stop doing it.

2nd step - Set up a date.

Mooji Baba sometimes says that we need to recover our true self.
I like this idea a lot.
It's as if we are like "God's" who at some point in our life, started a downwards path and forgot our true nature.
Maybe at times we had insights of how magical life could be, or maybe we're tired of suffering and now we have decided to change.
So we have to treat ourselves as an ex-smoker or a drug addict. We have to set up a "that's it date" and stick with it.

Speaking from experience, it is not that difficult. We need a little effort, a lot of patience, a little compassion for ourselves and a lot of commitment. And we should also be aware that the mind may want to come back at some point in the future.

3rd step - Find yogic resources to help you stay in the game.

Make use of mantra's, pranayama's, asana of course, meditation, etc.
I would recomend choosing one mantra to start with, and also start the day with your mantra, and end it with your mantra. If you want you can buy a Japa Mala for your mantra practice as a kind of reward you give to yourself for starting a new, much more clean, mature and beautiful chapter in your life.

4th step - Keep a Journal.

Record the best events in your day since you've started being a yogi.
"Talk" to your self kindly, give advice to your self, and plan for the next day if you have too much time on your own.
Try to become your own best friend.
And never forget to write a little goodbye note like, I love you / Thank you / You're beautiful, etc.
It is good to celebrate a little when your making progress.
You do love yourself, more than you can imagine, you possess the power of unconditional love, so allow these higher faculties to give a little love to your human form.

5th step - Forgive yourself.

Let's imagine that for some reason that is not worth imagining, you fell back.

Guess what?
It's ok.
It's no big deal.

Just remember not to fall back into the whole crazy routine again. A little misleading can happen to anyone, it's nothing to worry about. Don't let your foolish mind make it into an excuse to go back to the way things where before.

The minute it happens, you let it go and take the next opportunity to start your journey again.

Temptations will come, they always have. Remeber Jesus on the Wilderness?

Also, remember the things your grateful for, remember how better you've been feeling and don't fall back - it's easy beloved!

6th step - Share (optional)

I know this all seems a bit girly or new-agey.
But it works.

Karma Yoga is selfless work, working not for your own benefit. Working for the benefit of others.
Traditionally it means working as a volunteer, either for some time or for life, like Mother Teresa. But you can also apply this to your job.
It's also one of the things that is recomended to people who are depressed.
And you can trust me it works.

Of course it can be an unpleasant experience at first, specially if it's a difficult job with sick people or homeless people, but it depends on your attitude.
Find something that suits you. There are a lot of places where you can help.
By helping others you help yourself...

But don't think You are helping or that You are special, just natural working, have fun, take your mind away from your troubles... See if it works.

You see, a yogi should never think they're special, they just know that's it's a great fortune to have come across such a great, beautiful and complete teaching like yoga, and they simply know that it is possible, to perfect oneself and to find a happy peaceful way out of samsara.

One of the main principles of Yoga is named Satya - truthfulness.
True yogi's will not only speak the truth to others (not lying) but they will also be truthful unto themselfs.
So build your own inner strength, find a teacher whom you can relate to and/or a Sangha (spiritual friends) and be truthful unto yourself.

May all beings be happy and peaceful, may they all know real stillness at least once in their lives.
For their own benefit and for the benefit of others.
